Overview: Youngstown Country Club is a historic Ohio parkland course that combines Walter Travis’s original routing with Donald Ross’s later refinement. Rolling fairways, a meandering creek, tree-lined corridors and subtly breaking greens define the 6,663-yard, par-71 layout. Its character is traditional, strategic and closely tied to the landscape around Youngstown.
History: The club moved to its present property in 1909, where Walter Travis designed an 18-hole course that formally opened in 1912. Donald Ross upgraded the course in 1921, creating the layered design history visible today. Youngstown later hosted the 1925 Western Open, further establishing the course’s place in Ohio golf history.
Did You Know? Youngstown’s first greenskeeper, John Morley, helped found the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America in 1926. The course’s history therefore reaches beyond architecture into the professional development of modern course maintenance.
