Overview: Yellowstone Country Club is a private Robert Trent Jones Sr. course in Billings, positioned below the city's sandstone rimrocks. The 18-hole parkland layout occupies a large historic property and is framed by mature trees, broad views and the dry western landscape beyond the fairways. Jones's design uses large undulating greens, expansive tees and carefully positioned hazards to create a course that can challenge accomplished players while remaining approachable from shorter markers. Its character is traditional, but the Billings setting gives the course a distinctly Montana backdrop.
History: The club began as the nine-hole Billings Golf and Country Club in 1914, with another nine added during the First World War and later abandoned. After a clubhouse fire in 1956, the club moved to its present 630-acre site. Robert Trent Jones was hired as architect, construction began in April 1957, and the new golf course followed the opening of the pool in 1958. The club's history records later improvements including bunker work, replacement of the runway-style tees and a complete irrigation replacement completed in 2007.
Did You Know? Yellowstone Country Club's present 18 holes occupy only part of the original 630-acre property. The club history says 195 acres make up the current course, while the remaining land includes space for homes and an additional nine-hole possibility.
