Overview: Yarra Yarra Golf Club is an 18-hole Melbourne Sandbelt course in Bentleigh East, where sandy ground, native vegetation and wide, naturally shaped corridors give the layout its character. The course asks for thoughtful placement into its greens and uses the contrast between open fairway space and tree-lined holes to vary the tempo of the round. Its design is strategic, but the natural setting remains equally important.
History: The club began as a nine-hole course at Eaglemont in 1898 and was playing at Rosanna by 1911 under the Yarra Yarra name. In February 1927 the club purchased land at East Bentleigh in the Sandbelt. Alex Russell was selected to design the new course, which established the present site and its long association with Melbourne's championship golf landscape.
Did You Know? Yarra Yarra's early Eaglemont course gave women and men equal standing in the club's playing community from the outset, according to the club's history. That detail predates the present Sandbelt course but remains part of the club's unusually progressive origin story.
