Overview: Woods Hole Golf Club is a private coastal course on Cape Cod, with a sandy, wind-exposed setting beside Buzzards Bay. The 18-hole routing uses the site’s natural rise and coastal edges, creating a quieter, ground-oriented course whose character changes with the wind and light.
History: The club was formed in 1899, initially with a smaller course. Tom Winton developed the first 18-hole routing, which was in place by 1919; later research suggests Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek may have contributed to renovation work, but the club’s documented 18-hole origin remains Winton’s.
Did You Know? Francis Ouimet played the inaugural 18-hole round on the 1919 course and scored 72. Contemporary reporting also noted that one green was only a few yards from a white-sand beach, an unusually direct meeting of golf and shoreline.
