Overview: Woodhill Country Club is a Pretoria East parkland course laid through the city’s warmer bushveld edge, where indigenous vegetation, water and rolling fairways create a sense of space. Peter Matkovich’s 18-hole design opened in 1999 and is known for a strong collection of par threes, shaped greens and holes that ask the player to choose between a bold line and a wider, safer route.
History: Woodhill was created as part of a residential and golf estate during Pretoria’s eastern expansion. Matkovich’s design used the existing landform and drainage patterns to give the course a natural rhythm, while the club developed into a recognised local venue for Gauteng golf. Its history is therefore closely tied to the growth of the surrounding city as well as to the course itself.
Did You Know? Woodhill’s par threes are not filler between longer holes. They use different combinations of water, elevation, wind and green shape, so the short holes provide a compact survey of the course’s design language and often determine the momentum of a round.
