Overview: Wollongong Golf Club is a coastal 18-hole course between the Illawarra escarpment and the Pacific, with five holes close to the beach and the rest running through a more sheltered landscape. The setting makes wind and direction central to the round. A shot that is comfortable inland can become exposed near the shore, while the escarpment gives the inland holes a different scale and visual frame. Visitors can pair the course with Wollongong's beaches, harbour and city attractions.
History: The club was founded in 1897, and the city's thematic history records the original nine-hole course being laid out on 18 December that year. The club has grown from that local beginning into an established 18-hole venue with a long relationship to the coast. Recent hosting of the Ford NSW Women's Open has also placed the course in a contemporary competitive context.
Did You Know? The course is unusual in how clearly it changes atmosphere within one round. The beachside holes expose the ball to sea air and wind, while the inland sequence feels more protected and park-like. That transition is not just scenic; it changes club selection, trajectory and the amount of margin a golfer should leave around the greens.
