Overview: The Duke’s Course is the original championship layout at Woburn and runs through a mature estate landscape of pine, silver birch and chestnut. Its tree-lined fairways are unusually varied, with the par fours placing a premium on positioning and the par fives offering the most obvious opportunities to attack. Heather, bracken and gorse frame the holes, giving the course a polished parkland surface with a distinctly heathery character.
History: Charles Lawrie designed the Duke’s Course, which opened in 1976 as the first of Woburn’s three courses. The project came from the vision of the Marquess of Tavistock, later the 14th Duke of Bedford, and grew into a major tournament venue. The Duke’s has hosted the British Masters for two decades and has also staged the Women’s British Open and senior professional events.
Did You Know? Before the main clubhouse was built, Woburn’s first clubhouse was a simple log cabin behind what is now the 16th green. The Duke’s was also the course on which Karrie Webb produced a celebrated recovery during her Women’s British Open victory.
