Overview: Witbank Golf Club, now in eMalahleni, is an 18-hole parkland course with more than a century of local golfing history. The fairways are lined by mature trees and water features, and the course has an unusual practical detail: the N4 highway passes through the wider property, with a tunnel allowing the layout to remain connected. That infrastructure adds a distinct local stamp to a course otherwise shaped by traditional parkland golf.
History: Golf began here in 1907 as a nine-hole course built during Witbank’s mining era. The club later grew into the current 18-hole layout, with the clubhouse history reaching back to a stone and thatch building from 1928. Douw van der Merwe is associated with the later 18-hole design described in the area’s golf material, while the club’s older origins remain visible in its long-running community role.
Did You Know? The N4 does not simply run near the golf course, it cuts through the property. Golfers use a tunnel to move between sections of the layout, an everyday piece of infrastructure that makes Witbank unlike most parkland courses. It is an excellent example of how a working city can leave its mark on the shape of a golf round.
