Overview: Wingate Park Country Club offers 18 parkland holes in Moreleta Park, Pretoria, with a classic tree-lined layout shaped by the land rather than by a modern housing estate. The course’s playing identity comes from the relationship between the corridors and the surrounding vegetation, so drives need to be placed with the next shot in mind. It is a traditional inland club course, the sort of routing where accuracy and a good understanding of angles can matter more than raw distance.
History: Tim Guthrie was involved in bringing the project together, with A. Tomsett designing the 18-hole course and Dave Guthrie and H.S.V. Alison assisting with the work. The course was completed and opened in April 1951. Wingate later became an unofficial University of Pretoria course in 1962, adding a layer of student and amateur golf history to its established club identity.
Did You Know? The connection with the University of Pretoria began informally rather than through a formal renaming of the club. For years, Wingate served as a practical home for university golfers, which helps explain its importance as more than a local recreational course. Its history is tied to the steady development of Pretoria golf and the players who learned the game there.
