Overview: The Highlands Course at Wildcat Golf Club brings an elevated, open feel to a part of Houston better known for flat ground. Roy Case designed the 18-hole routing as one of Wildcat’s two distinct courses, using broad movement in the land, changing lies and long views toward the Houston skyline and NRG Stadium complex. The operator describes elevation changes of up to 100 feet across the facility and a blend of links-style ideas with Texas Hill Country character. Highlands is therefore best understood through its topography: the visual distance can be generous, but the next shot often depends on how well the player has handled a slope or chosen the correct side of a mound.
History: Wildcat was developed as a golf destination close to Houston’s professional sports and medical districts, with the Highlands and Lakes courses sharing the same 12000 Almeda Road address while remaining separate 18-hole routings. Roy Case is the architect credited by the current operator. The two-course structure is central to the club’s identity, because it allows the facility to offer different views and strategic questions without changing base or leaving the city’s south side.
Did You Know? The course’s elevated ground produces views of both Houston’s skyline and the NRG Stadium complex, an unusual pairing for a city golf course. The Highlands name is fitting for another reason: the course makes its largest impression through rises, drops and exposed lines rather than through a single famous hazard. On a clear day, the skyline becomes part of the target picture, while the changing elevation keeps the shot values grounded in the land.
