Overview: Avocet is the 18-hole regulation course at Wild Wing Golf Club in Conway, just inland from Myrtle Beach. Jeff Brauer and three-time major champion Larry Nelson designed a par-72 course that reaches 7,127 yards and uses subtle elevation changes, double greens, dual fairways, creative green complexes and drivable par fours. The routing is playful in its variety, but the unusual features still require precise decisions when the safer line and the more ambitious line diverge.
History: Wild Wing's Avocet Course opened in 1993 and was later recognized as a leading new resort course. A recent restoration led by original architect Jeff Brauer has focused on returning greens to their original size, refreshing bunkers and reviving design details while installing updated TifEagle surfaces. The work is intended to recover the character of the original routing rather than replace it with a new course.
Did You Know? The 14th is a drivable par four that gives golfers of very different abilities a genuine risk-and-reward decision. The course also uses double greens and dual fairways, so several holes ask players to read not only distance and direction but which section of the architecture offers the best angle to the pin.
