Overview: Whiting Bay Golf Club climbs the hillside above the village on the south-east coast of Arran, looking across the Firth of Clyde to Holy Isle and the Ayrshire coast. The eighteen holes are made up of nine par threes and nine par fours, totalling about 4,450 yards to a par of 63. Gorse and heather line narrow fairways, and the climbs make club selection more important than length. The walk is a steady climb, so each higher tee changes the scale of the view and the wind exposure; the return towards the village feels different from the outward holes.
History: Golf began at Whiting Bay in 1895, and the club is now one of the original members of the 1895 Club network. The course climbs from lower ground near the clubhouse to a plateau before turning through heather and gorse. Its high point is at the 11th, after which the route descends towards the village; the outward climb gives way to a more open return.
Did You Know? The 11th hole marks the summit of the course, and from there the view takes in Holy Isle, home to a Buddhist retreat, sitting just offshore in Lamlash Bay.
