Overview: Whirlpool Golf Course is an 18-hole Stanley Thompson design beside the Niagara River Gorge. The official scorecard lists par 72 and 7,019 yards from the gold tees, while the current course page describes a classic parkland layout with strategic bunkering, sweeping fairways and distinctive elevation. Six holes cross a plateau, creating a change in ground and perspective that separates the course from a conventional flat parkland round. The Niagara Gorge is always close to the experience, but the course remains a complete strategic test rather than a scenic walk with golf added around it.
History: Whirlpool opened in 1951 and was the final course completed by Stanley Thompson. Niagara Parks has treated the layout as an important piece of Canadian public golf, and its current phased renovation is intended to restore the course toward its original Thompson character while protecting long-term playability. The course has also carried a strong public identity for decades, combining a historic architect with a setting that puts the river gorge and Niagara Parkway at the centre of the round.
Did You Know? Whirlpool received Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary status in 2026 after environmental planning, habitat work and sustainable course-management improvements. That recognition adds a modern ecological layer to a course whose original design already depends heavily on the gorge, woodland and natural landform.
