Overview: West Monmouthshire Golf Club occupies high ground above Nantyglo at the head of the western valleys of Blaenau Gwent. The club describes itself as the highest golf course in Great Britain, and the elevated setting gives the round a character that is very different from lowland parkland golf. Fairways run across open, exposed ground with the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains providing the wider backdrop. Wind is a constant design feature, while changes in elevation affect both club selection and the way the course is seen from the tees. At 6,233 yards and par 71, the layout is not defined by length alone. Its appeal lies in the combination of mountain air, broad views, firm turf and the need to judge how the ball will react on sloping ground. Ben Sayers is credited with the design, and the club's visitor information makes the course available beyond its membership.
History: West Monmouthshire's own history records that local teachers and doctors constructed the course to a design by Ben Sayers in 1906. The full eighteen-hole course was in place by 1909, when the club became affiliated to the Gwent Golf Union and served the communities of North Monmouthshire. That origin explains the club's close connection with the surrounding valleys: it was created as a local sporting institution on difficult upland terrain rather than as a resort development. The course still hosts county championships and retains the compact, community-rooted identity of a private club, while continuing to welcome visiting golfers through its published visitor arrangements.
Did You Know? The club's course page places the highest point at the 14th tee, about 463 metres above sea level. From there, the panorama is part of the golfing test: a clear view across the surrounding uplands helps explain why West Monmouthshire is often described by the club as a links-like course in the sky.
