Overview: The West Course at Wentworth is a large Surrey heathland layout framed by pine, rhododendron and rolling sandy ground. Harry Colt's routing uses changes of elevation, long approaches and carefully positioned hazards to create a course that tests both driving and control into the greens. The scale of the property gives the holes room to breathe, but the closing sequence still asks for exact distance management across a demanding championship finish.
History: Wentworth Club was founded in 1922, followed by the East Course in 1924 and Colt's West Course in the mid-1920s. The West was originally known as Championship No. 2. Its subsequent history includes the 1953 Ryder Cup and later modernisation by Ernie Els, while the course has been the regular home of the BMW PGA Championship since 1984.
Did You Know? The West Course is one of the places where the Ryder Cup's later history can be read directly in the landscape: the course hosted the 1953 match, while the club's East Course had hosted the informal British-American match that helped inspire the competition.
