Overview: The Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa is a public desert layout on Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation land east of Scottsdale. Scott Miller routed the course through arroyos, desert ridges and open Sonoran ground, with clear landing areas and visible hazards creating risk-and-reward choices from the tee. The Superstition Mountains and Red Mountain provide the setting without housing along the playing lines.
History: We-Ko-Pa opened in December 2001 with Cholla as its first course. The success of Miller's routing led to a second course, Saguaro, designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and added to the facility in 2006.
Did You Know? Cholla was named Golf Inc.'s development of the year when it opened. Its traditional desert design philosophy is intentionally different from Saguaro's more ground-game-oriented Coore and Crenshaw routing, even though both courses share the same facility.
