Overview: The Darien club's present 18-hole Emmet routing is shaped by Hollow Tree Ridge and the Stony Brook. The scorecard record is par 72 and 7,166 yards. Emmet's routing mixes long and short holes, turns through the land rather than marching in a straight line, and uses small greens with steep surrounds to make approach placement important. The stream is part of the course's identity, but the broader character comes from the way the layout preserves the scale and variety of an early twentieth-century parkland design.
History: The club began in the 1890s with a six-hole course laid out by George Strath, with three more holes added soon afterward. Unable to expand the original site to a full 18, Wee Burn moved to Hollow Tree Ridge in 1923 and hired Devereux Emmet to design the new course. The present 18-hole layout opened for play in 1925. It later hosted three U.S. Women's Amateur Championships, won by Betty Jameson in 1939, Ann Quast in 1958 and Martha Wilkinson in 1970. More recent work has included modifications associated with Tom Fazio.
Did You Know? “Wee Burn” is a Scottish expression for a small stream, a reference to the Stony Brook that runs through the property. The name therefore describes a physical feature that links the club's early site with its present course.
