Overview: The Saguaro Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is a Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw design in Fort McDowell where the Sonoran Desert remains visible from every fairway. The routing follows natural washes and the movement of the land instead of forcing a conventional resort grid, with greens and tees placed close enough to make the course unusually comfortable to walk for the Phoenix region. Wide playing corridors, sparse rough and bold desert edges create room for creative lines, while the changing elevation and exposed mountain views keep the strategy in motion.
History: We-Ko-Pa's golf story began in December 2001 with Scott Miller's Cholla course. Its success led the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation to commission a second course, and Coore and Crenshaw began shaping Saguaro in 2005. The new course opened in 2006 with a deliberately different architectural language: less conventional desert target golf, more movement through native washes and closer green-to-tee relationships. The two courses now form the central golf identity of the We-Ko-Pa property.
Did You Know? During the design process, Coore and Crenshaw walked the Saguaro site for two months before settling on the routing. Their purpose was to locate the best natural green sites first, allowing the holes to follow the desert's existing shape instead of imposing a preconceived pattern.
