Overview: Wawashkamo Golf Club is a historic nine-hole links-style course on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Alex Smith laid it out in 1898, and it remains on the grounds of Mackinac Island State Park. Small tees, compact greens and open rolling ground preserve an early form of American golf.
History: Wawashkamo was laid out on a former farm that was also part of the 1814 Battle of Mackinac Island site. The club celebrated its centennial in 1998 and says the course remains substantially faithful to Smith’s design heritage.
Did You Know? Wawashkamo was named an America’s Historic Golf Landmark by Golf Digest in 1996, and the club describes it as the only nine-hole course among that group.
