Overview: Water Rock Golf Course occupies an 18-hole parkland course near Midleton in East Cork, set beside the Owenacurra River and within easy reach of Cork city, the airport and Fota Island. The current course page lists par 70 and 6,220 yards, with five par threes and three par fives. Its design uses wide bailout areas on the front nine before bringing water into play on five holes on the back nine. The signature 12th is a 240-yard par three known locally as Swan Lake, and the uphill 18th completes the water-led finish.
History: Water Rock opened in 1994 and was designed by Paddy Merrigan, whose other Irish work includes Old Head of Kinsale, Slieve Russell and Woodenbridge. The course was built with sand-based greens and a strategic approach intended to offer scoring chances without removing the need for careful decisions. It is a family-run, green-fee-oriented venue, but the course history is architectural as much as operational: Merrigan’s use of water and shaped land gives the layout its identity.
Did You Know? The 12th hole’s “Swan Lake” nickname comes from its water setting and the long carry demanded from the back tee. The finishing holes then use three lakes in sequence, so the course’s strongest visual idea is concentrated on the back nine rather than spread evenly across all eighteen holes.
