Overview: Wasioto Winds is the 18-hole course at Pine Mountain State Resort Park in southeastern Kentucky. Dr. Michael Hurdzan routed the course through the park's bottomland and the Appalachian setting, combining gently rolling ground, mature woodland, wetlands and water features. The layout has a links-inspired openness in places, but its identity comes from the surrounding mountains and the way the holes move through the valley. Multiple teeing options, five par threes and five par fives give the par-72 course an unusually varied rhythm.
History: Wasioto Winds opened in 2001 as the first course in Kentucky's Signature Series of state-park courses. It expanded the golf offering at Pine Mountain, a park whose roots reach back to 1925, when Bell County citizens acquired land for a recreation and conservation area. The Commonwealth designated the property as a state park in 1926. Today the course remains integrated with the resort's forest, trails and lake-and-valley landscape rather than being an isolated golf development.
Did You Know? Six bridges cross water on the course, which also brings three lakes, a creek and wetlands into play. The unusual combination of five par threes and five par fives means the round has more short and long holes than a conventional 18-hole balance, creating a distinctive test of club selection.
