Overview: Wanumetonomy Golf & Country Club is a classic coastal course on the western edge of Aquidneck Island in Middletown. Seth Raynor designed it in his open “sea coast” style, using broad hillsides, few trees and changing views toward the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. The 18-hole par 70 routing is shaped by wind as much as by the ground, and its firm-looking lines and purposeful bunkering reward players who choose the correct angle rather than simply seeking the widest part of a fairway. It remains a quiet, traditional expression of Rhode Island seaside golf.
History: Wanumetonomy was established in 1922 and Raynor’s original design followed the contours of an expansive hillside property. The club later engaged Ron Prichard to prepare a long-term restoration plan in 1999. More than two decades later, architect Tyler Ray began a new twenty-year plan in 2021, continuing the effort to keep the course’s classic character relevant to present-day play. The sequence shows a club treating its architecture as an ongoing stewardship project rather than a fixed museum piece.
Did You Know? Wanumetonomy is commonly translated in local lore as “windy hill,” an apt name for a course whose views and playing lines are continually altered by the bay breeze. The club and surrounding area take their name from a Narragansett sachem associated with Aquidneck Island in the seventeenth century. That combination of Indigenous place history, exposed topography and Raynor’s sea-coast design gives the course a character that is distinctly tied to its setting.
