Overview: Walton Heath's New Course is a championship heathland layout in Surrey that shares the club's open, sandy setting with the celebrated Old. Herbert Fowler created a distinctly different test here: the New uses a network of carefully placed cross hazards and strategic options that ask players to choose between a safe line and an ambitious attack. Heather becomes more prominent as the round develops, while the longer par fours on the inward half place a premium on driving and precise approach play. The back tees measure 7,015 yards and the course is par 72, although the club also publishes a 6,659-yard medal course. Firm turf, running-shot options and a broad sky give the New a character that sits comfortably between classic heathland and inland links golf.
History: Walton Heath Golf Club was founded in 1903, and the New Course began as nine holes in 1907 before being extended to a full eighteen in 1913. The club's heritage records that the completed course was opened by the Lord Mayor of London. Fowler's original architectural character remains central to the course, while Tom Mackenzie and Martin Ebert are now carrying out phased restoration work across the Walton Heath property. The club has also been a major championship venue, including the 1981 Ryder Cup, the 2018 British Masters and the 2023 AIG Women's Open.
Did You Know? The New Course record is 62, shot by David Boote during U.S. Open qualifying on 29 May 2017. The club also describes nine strategically positioned hazards on the New, giving golfers choices from the tee rather than forcing one prescribed route into every hole.
