Overview: Wachesaw Plantation Club is a private Tom Fazio course in Murrells Inlet, set on a high bluff above the Intracoastal Waterway. The 18-hole routing moves through live-oak groves, cypress, marsh influence and gently rolling ground, using the Lowcountry's small changes in elevation to create different sight lines and approach angles. The current scorecard measures 6,833 yards at par 72. Mike Strantz assisted Fazio on the project, and that connection helps explain the course's carefully shaped green surrounds and varied movement through the property. The result is a quiet, strategic layout whose strongest features come from the relationship between the land, the trees and the waterway beyond.
History: Wachesaw Plantation Club was founded in 1985 as a private country club on South Carolina's Hammock Coast. The Tom Fazio-designed golf course opened to members in 1986, followed shortly by the clubhouse. The site has a much older human history: archaeological work in the early 1980s found evidence of Native American settlement, while the plantation land later supported rice and indigo production. The club's current identity brings those layers together, retaining historic markers and the landscape of the high bluff while presenting a modern championship course.
Did You Know? The Kimbels restaurant began with an old hunting cabin that was purchased and moved to the property. Its later replacement now sits on the bluff above the Intracoastal Waterway and the 18th green, linking a distinctive piece of local history with one of the course's signature views.
