Overview: Situated on the shores of the Bothnian Bay near Oulu, Finland, Virpiniemi Golf Club is an 18-hole coastal woodland course designed by Jan Sederholm. The layout transitions from tight, tree-lined corridors in a mature pine forest to open, wind-swept holes directly bordering the sea. The course features rolling fairways, strategic sand hazards, and large green complexes, demanding versatility to handle both forest precision and coastal wind management.
History: Opened for play in 2006, the course was built to establish a premier coastal golf facility in Northern Ostrobothnia. Sederholm carefully routed the 18 holes to showcase the diverse coastal landscape, utilizing the sandy maritime soil to ensure excellent natural drainage and high-quality playing conditions throughout the Finnish summer.
Did You Know? Due to its high northern latitude near the Arctic Circle, during the peak of summer the course enjoys 24-hour daylight. This solar exposure allows golfers to play a full round in the middle of the night under the spectacular glow of the midnight sun.
