Overview: Vineyard Golf Club is a private 7,146-yard, par 72 course in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard. Its sandy, heath-like ground and changing coastal breezes give the layout a links character, but the course is also defined by how quietly it sits within the landscape. The design uses existing landform, native vegetation and broad views rather than conspicuous construction. The club’s organic maintenance program is part of the course identity, with the playing surfaces and surrounding habitat managed as one connected landscape on roughly 225 preserved acres.
History: Donald Steel first saw the site in June 1999, when the former land presented a demanding combination of sandy ground, open exposure and environmental constraints. The project developed through a careful approval and construction process, and the course opened in 2002. Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner are associated with the later course work and the club’s current design presentation. The result is an unusually modern course with an intentionally old-fashioned visual language: wide natural spaces, strategic green approaches and a strong relationship with the land.
Did You Know? Vineyard Golf Club describes itself as the first organic golf course in the country. Its program avoids synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, so course preparation depends on soil management, plant selection and close observation of local conditions. That environmental ambition is not a separate project beside the golf; it is part of the club’s stated design and operating philosophy.
