Overview: Vila Sol Prime/Challenge is the ranked 18-hole combination formed from two of the three nines at Pestana Vila Sol near Vilamoura. Donald Steel’s original design runs through pine woodland and a broad valley, with fig, oak, almond, and cork trees adding character and strategic pressure. The Prime and Challenge loops together create a par-72 round of narrow fairways, lakes, bunkers, and demanding target lines. A controlled opening shot often determines whether the next approach is open or partially blocked by trees.
History: The original Vila Sol course opened in 1991, and the Prime and Challenge loops hosted the Portuguese Open in 1992 and 1993. A third nine, Prestige, was added later, making Vila Sol a 27-hole facility with several combinations. This profile is limited to the Prime/Challenge routing named in the directory, not the separate Prestige loop. That distinction matters because facility dates and hole count are broader than the ranked course identity.
Did You Know? The seventh hole on the Prime loop is a downhill par-three over water, one of the clearest examples of Vila Sol’s compact strategic style. The course can feel enclosed by trees on one hole and open across the valley on the next. That changing scale makes the Prime and Challenge pairing more varied than its resort setting first suggests.
