Overview: Victoria National Golf Club occupies a large reclaimed-mining landscape beside the Ohio River near Newburgh. Tom Fazio shaped the former strip-mine ground into a private 18-hole course whose identity comes from broad landforms, exposed earth, water, and dramatic changes in elevation. The setting is open and rugged in places, but the holes are arranged with enough variety to create very different sightlines from one green to the next. From the back tees the course measures about 7,200 yards and plays to par 72. Its scale, wind, and large hazards make club selection and positioning central to the round.
History: The course was developed on land once worked by the Peabody Coal Company and opened in 1998. Founder Terry Friedman commissioned Fazio to turn a damaged industrial landscape into a golf destination with a strong sense of place. Rather than hide the mining history, the design uses the old landforms and water patterns as part of the experience. Victoria National later became a regular stage for high-level professional golf, including the Korn Ferry Tour Championship, adding a competitive chapter to the club's relatively young history.
Did You Know? Victoria National is one of the clearest examples of a major golf course being created on reclaimed mine land. The course name preserves a link to the former Victoria strip mine, while the finished landscape turns that industrial past into the visual framework for the holes.
