Overview: Vesper Country Club is a private Donald Ross course in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts, along the Merrimack River. The parkland routing uses mature trees, gentle movement and water-side land to create a New England course with a strong sense of place. Its greens and bunkering carry Ross’s influence, while the river setting adds a quieter natural edge to the round.
History: Vesper’s roots reach back to the Vesper Boat Club, founded in 1875, and a six-hole golf course added in 1895. Donald Ross designed nine new mainland holes and redesigned the island nine in 1919; the resulting 18-hole course opened in 1921.
Did You Know? Donald Ross won the first Massachusetts Open held at Vesper in 1905, years before returning to create the 18-hole course. His two roles as competitor and architect are part of the club’s unusually direct connection to early Massachusetts golf.
