Overview: The Mountain Course at Ventana Canyon is a Tom Fazio design in the Santa Catalina foothills above Tucson. The routing climbs into high Sonoran Desert terrain, using perched tees, rock formations, elevation drops and long views across the valley. Its desert character is more mountainous than flat, and the lines into the greens change as the course rises and falls through the foothills.
History: The Mountain Course opened on December 1, 1984 as one of Ventana Canyon's two Tom Fazio championship courses. It later hosted the Merrill Lynch PGA Shootout in 1987 and 1988, adding professional tournament history to the mountain setting.
Did You Know? Fazio described the third hole as the shortest par three he had built and possibly one of the most expensive because of the construction needed in the mountain terrain. The hole's scale is small, but the surrounding rock and elevation make it a signature part of the routing.
