Overview: Vallda Golf & Country Club is a British heathland-inspired course in Halland, laid over meadowland surrounded by oak forest in Valldadalen outside Kungsbacka. Martin Hawtree shaped the 18-hole layout around the existing terrain, using distinctive bunkers, undulating greens, tall rough, and firm ground to create a course that asks for both accuracy and imagination. The routing offers alternative ways to approach several holes, so the course is not solved by one formula. It has the visual openness of a heathland course, but the surrounding woodland and changing ridges keep the round intimate.
History: Vallda began as a mid-1990s dream shared by a group of friends who wanted to create a classic British heathland course in Sweden. They eventually found 86 hectares of meadowland and oak forest, secured planning permission, and commissioned Martin Hawtree to design the layout with inspiration from English courses of the 1920s. The first nine holes opened in May 2009, and the remaining nine were completed two months later, creating the full 18-hole course within the same season.
Did You Know? Vallda’s designers deliberately built alternative routes into the layout, giving players more than one way to solve a number of holes. That feature changes the course from round to round: a line that looks conservative from one tee can create the better angle, while a bolder route may offer a shorter approach at the cost of a more difficult recovery. The strategic variety is part of Vallda’s original design brief.
