Overview: Valhalla Golf Club, situated in the rolling hills of Louisville, Kentucky, is a legendary modern championship parkland course designed by the iconic Jack Nicklaus. Set across a sprawling, diverse property, the front nine features a wide, links-style layout with massive mounds and rolling fairways, while the back nine transitions into a traditional, tree-lined parkland test bisected by natural creeks. The course is highly celebrated for its brawny, tournament-ready layout, featuring large, multi-tiered greens protected by deep sand traps and scenic water hazards.
History: Opened in 1986, Valhalla was built by local business owners specifically to host major international championships, a goal it has achieved spectacularly. It has hosted four PGA Championships, a Senior PGA Championship, and the historic 2008 Ryder Cup. In recent years, the course underwent a highly acclaimed renovation under Nicklaus's guidance to rebuild all 18 greens and update the bunkers, ensuring it remains a premier, modern test.
Did You Know? Valhalla was the historic site of the 2000 PGA Championship, where Tiger Woods defeated Bob May in a dramatic 3-hole playoff, famously pointing at the hole as his winning birdie putt dropped on the 18th green. The course’s signature 18th hole features a unique, horseshoe-shaped green guarded by water, presenting one of the most dramatic finishing holes in tournament golf.
