Overview: Umhlali is a North Coast parkland course where Peter Matkovich’s 18-hole design works through indigenous vegetation, rolling ground and the warm coastal landscape north of Durban. The estate setting gives the course a quiet, spacious feel, but the fairways are not simply wide corridors: changing lies, trees and shaped green approaches make placement important from the first tee onward.
History: Umhlali developed as part of the region’s growth from small coastal communities into a major residential and holiday corridor. The course was designed to sit within that landscape rather than flatten it, leaving pockets of indigenous vegetation between the holes. The club’s current identity combines a local country-club tradition with the practical appeal of a North Coast golf base.
Did You Know? The indigenous vegetation is one of the course’s best navigation cues. Instead of presenting eighteen disconnected holes, Umhlali uses the natural bush and coastal plants to separate one corridor from the next, giving the round a more continuous sense of place.
