Overview: Umdoni Park is a coastal 18-hole course at Pennington on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, set within an old estate where the front nine looks toward the sea and the back nine turns into forest. The course measures about 5,560 metres from the back markers. Its appeal is not a single dramatic hazard but the change of atmosphere between open coastal views, tree-lined fairways and the quiet green interior of the park.
History: The Umdoni Park Trust was established in 1920, the first golf nine followed in 1921 and the second nine was added in 1930. That staged development explains the course’s varied character: it grew within an existing estate landscape rather than being cleared and shaped all at once. The club remains closely connected to the park’s conservation identity.
Did You Know? Umdoni’s name comes from the wild umdoni trees that are part of the coastal forest. The course’s two halves therefore have a botanical as well as a golfing contrast, moving from sea-facing openness into vegetation that feels much older than the fairways around it.
