Overview: Ullna Golf & Country Club lies beside Lake Ullna north of Stockholm, where soft hills, streams, ponds, and wooded parkland give the course a distinctive lakeside rhythm. The layout began with Sven Tumba’s original vision and now combines that routing with the strategic upgrade by Jack Nicklaus and Nicklaus Design. Water is present throughout the round, but the challenge is not simply to avoid it: players must decide how much of the shaping, carry, and changing ground to use on each hole. The result is a course that looks scenic from every angle while demanding deliberate choices from tee to green.
History: Ullna was inaugurated on 27 August 1981 by Prince Bertil and Sven Tumba, who had developed the course as a major project beside the lake. Nicklaus Design later undertook a thorough two-year renovation that created new tees, fairways, greens, and green surrounds while preserving the original line of the course. The upgraded layout was re-inaugurated on 8 June 2013. The work also reshaped streams, ponds, drainage, and the surrounding land so the water became a more integrated part of the strategy.
Did You Know? Sven Tumba was a major figure in Swedish sport before becoming the driving force behind Ullna. The club’s history records that he combined elite ice hockey and football careers with golf and course development, then celebrated the course inauguration on his 50th birthday. That unusual sporting history is woven directly into Ullna’s identity rather than being a separate clubhouse story.
