Overview: The Golf Club at Turner Hill is a private 18-hole course in Ipswich, set across the historic Rice Estate. The published blue tees measure 6,662 yards and the course is par 72. Designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, the layout uses varied topography, wetlands, wooded corridors and elevated ground to create a parkland course with more movement than its estate setting might suggest. The historic mansion and broad property give the round a strong sense of place, while the golf itself is built around changing elevation and carefully framed approaches.
History: Turner Hill’s golf course is a modern addition to an older estate. The Rice mansion predates the golf course and was designed by Boston architect William Rantoul. The 18-hole course was completed in 2003, according to Massachusetts Golf Association reporting, and Hurdzan and Fry were responsible for the golf design. The club now combines the contemporary course with the preserved estate, clubhouse and surrounding grounds.
Did You Know? The course’s highest point is little Turner Hill, where the 11th hole climbs to roughly 271 feet above sea level. That elevation helps explain why the layout can produce broad views and substantial changes in perspective despite being in coastal northeastern Massachusetts. The estate’s original two-lane candlepin bowling alley is another unusual surviving feature of the wider property.
