Turnberry Golf Club (King Robert the Bruce)

Overview: King Robert the Bruce is Turnberry’s second full-length links, occupying much of the footprint of the former Kintyre course but presenting a substantially new layout. The routing moves through exposed coastal ground beside Turnberry Castle, with gorse, wind, revetted bunkers and broad views towards the lighthouse and Maidens Bay. Its high points are dramatic, but the course also relies on strategic choices through the lower holes and the closing stretch.

History: Martin Ebert designed the course as a virtually new sister layout to the reborn Ailsa. Every hole was either newly created or significantly modified, including a new par five at the 8th, the cliff-edge valley at the 9th and the wetland beside the 13th. The course carries the name of Robert the Bruce because Turnberry Castle is associated with the Scottish king and the history of the surrounding coast.

Did You Know? The opening hole is called Barley Rigs, a reference to barley fields planted beside the course after the Second World War. The 17th is named Lea Rig, while the final hole is Bruce’s Hame, tying the hole names to the landscape and the course’s historical theme.
