Overview: The Riverview Course at Trump National Golf Club Washington, D.C. is a private 18-hole layout in Sterling, Virginia, set beside the Potomac River. Arthur Hills and Tom Fazio shaped the course across a floodplain landscape where lakes, wetlands, levees and wooded edges supply the main architectural drama. Water comes into play on ten holes, and the course can stretch to 7,234 yards at par 72. Wind across the river and the changing relationship between fairway, lake and green make it a course of angles and decisions rather than a simple target from tee to green.
History: The Riverview Course was developed as the River Course at Lowes Island Club and opened in 1999, before Donald Trump acquired the property in 2009. The site presented an unusual engineering challenge: much of it lies in the Potomac floodplain, so the design team used excavated lake material to build playing features and a protective perimeter levee. That practical infrastructure is part of the course’s identity, even though the finished holes read as a polished links-style landscape. The club now operates Riverview alongside the other 18-hole course at the Washington, D.C. property.
Did You Know? During construction, the Riverview site was designed to withstand a 100-year storm event. The levee, lakes and raised tees and greens were not simply decorative earthworks; they were central to making championship golf possible on low-lying river land. That is why the course’s water strategy and floodplain history are closely connected.
