Overview: Heathlands is the original 18-hole course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon, north of Toronto. Doug Carrick designed the layout after being influenced by the links at Portmarnock, using wind-swept mounds, fescue, open ground and pot bunkers to create a links-inspired course on an inland site. The current tournament record lists par 70 and about 6,983 yards. Heathlands is separate from the later Hoot and North courses, even though the three now form one public 54-hole destination.
History: Heathlands opened in 1992 and began as a course with a simple clubhouse and gravel parking area. Its word-of-mouth popularity led the owners to add the North and Hoot courses a decade later, all designed by Carrick. The property later became TPC Toronto and entered a partnership with Golf Canada to create a national home for the sport. Heathlands remains the course that established Osprey Valley’s identity.
Did You Know? Carrick’s first true links experience at Portmarnock helped shape the Heathlands concept. The course does not sit beside an ocean, but its fescue mounds, pot bunkers and wind-exposed ground borrow links ideas and translate them to Ontario. That makes the routing useful for golfers who want to compare a genuine coastal links with an inland course built around the same strategic language.
