Overview: Toka Sticks Golf Course is an 18-hole public layout in Mesa, next to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport and the former Williams Air Force Base. The Army Corps of Engineers designed the original recreational facility, which current course records date to 1950. It plays to par 72 and roughly 6,900 yards from the longest tees, with level fairways framed by mature eucalyptus, mesquite, palm and palo verde trees. The course is a notable alternative to the exposed desert style common elsewhere in the Valley, relying on tree placement, doglegs and elevated greens for its strategy.
History: Toka Sticks was created for personnel at Williams Air Force Base and is owned today by the Gila River Indian Community. Its military-recreation origin makes it one of the most distinctive historic golf properties in the Phoenix region. The facility has been updated over time, but the original flat-land setting and tree-lined corridors remain central to the experience. Its position beside the ASU Polytechnic campus and airport also makes it a convenient East Valley round.
Did You Know? Toka Sticks was originally designed as a military recreation facility. The name now belongs to one of Arizona’s oldest continuously recognised golf properties, with old-growth trees shaping many of the holes.
