Overview: King/General is the original two-nine routing at The Woodlands Country Club’s Palmer Course, a 27-hole Arnold Palmer complex in The Woodlands north of Houston. The layout moves through mature trees and gently rolling ground, using water, broad fairways and subtly demanding greens to create a round that is strategic without feeling artificial. King and General form a coherent 18-hole experience, but the club’s three-nine structure means the exact combination deserves its own profile. This entry refers specifically to the King/General order, not to the later Deacon loop or to the Palmer complex as a whole.
History: The Woodlands’ official history identifies King and General as the original Palmer nines, opened in 1990. Deacon was added in 1995, completing the present 27-hole arrangement. King/General consequently represents the starting point of the Palmer Course’s story, before the third loop expanded the available combinations. The design remains recognisable as Palmer golf, with clear strategic options, a mix of hole lengths and a setting that lets the surrounding woodland influence play while keeping the targets legible.
Did You Know? The General nine’s par-five fourth has an island green, an unusually memorable target within a course that otherwise relies heavily on its wooded setting and changing ground. In the King/General combination, that hole appears alongside one of the original Palmer loops, making this the historically first of the complex’s possible 18-hole pairings.
