Overview: The General/Deacon routing at The Woodlands Country Club’s Palmer Course pairs two nine-hole loops from Arnold Palmer’s 27-hole complex. Set among the trees and rolling ground of The Woodlands, the course combines generous corridors with water, changing angles and greens that ask for precision after an inviting drive. General brings the character of one of the original Palmer nines, while Deacon provides the newer companion loop. Preserving the exact routing is important: this is not a generic entry for every hole at the club, but a specific 18-hole combination within a three-nine design.
History: The Woodlands’ official golf history places King and General at the beginning of the Palmer Course, with those original nines opening in 1990. Deacon followed in 1995 and completed the 27-hole property. That sequence gives the General/Deacon round a useful historical split, linking one of Palmer’s original loops with the later addition. The design continues to show the qualities associated with Palmer’s work, including readable strategic choices, varied green approaches and a setting where trees and water shape the line of play without overwhelming the land.
Did You Know? The General nine includes an island green on the par-five fourth, a feature the club highlights alongside its deep, undulating putting surfaces. Playing General/Deacon therefore places one of the Palmer Course’s most distinctive green settings in the same round as the Deacon loop, giving the combination a character of its own.
