Overview: The Wisley’s Garden/Church routing joins two of the club’s three nine-hole loops into one 18-hole, par-72 course measuring 6,741 yards. Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s design moves between enclosed woodland edges and more open ground, so the character changes as the holes turn through the property. Bunkers frame approaches to the greens, and the two nines offer distinct visual cues that help make this composite routing feel like a complete round rather than a simple sequence of holes.
History: The Wisley opened in 1991 as a member-owned club designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The 224-acre property was laid out as three nine-hole courses, named Garden, Church and Mill after nearby landmarks. Combining Garden and Church creates the directory’s 18-hole course; the remaining Mill loop gives the club a third set of holes and allows members to vary their round without leaving the site.
Did You Know? The Garden and Church names refer to local features rather than playing styles. The Garden’s fifth hole follows the River Wey, while the Church nine finishes among mature trees and rhododendrons. Those different settings are part of what makes the two loops read distinctly when played together, with water and garden ground on one side of the routing and a more enclosed finish on the other.
