Overview: Mount Yokine holds an 18-hole private course at the Western Australian Golf Club at Mount Yokine, only about eight kilometres from Perth’s CBD. The layout uses the natural contours of the hill, with a flatter front nine, a more elevated back nine, narrow fairways and small, sharply tilted greens. The lake near the clubhouse and the view from the 12th tee add visual drama, but the course’s main demand is accuracy. It is a traditional metropolitan club whose character comes from topography and the quality of the approach shots it asks for.
History: The club was formed in 1928 after land at Mount Yokine was assembled and part of the property was set aside for golf. Eustace Cohen and V. Steffanoni are associated with the original course, Alex Russell contributed to the early bunkering scheme, and Graham Marsh has carried out later work including the modern closing holes. The Tudor clubhouse and the course have evolved together through a long members’ history.
Did You Know? The 12th tee is one of the highest viewpoints in metropolitan Perth, according to the club. From that elevation the course’s setting becomes clear: the fairways are not laid across a flat block, but routed over the contours of Mount Yokine with views toward the city and Darling Range.
