Overview: The Wanderers Golf Club is a mature Johannesburg parkland course with an 18-hole par-71 routing that measures about 6,575 metres from the club tees. Tree-lined fairways, established greens and the dense urban setting give the course a traditional country-club feel despite its location in one of the city’s busiest areas. The layout rewards position and control, particularly when the mature vegetation reduces the margin for a loose drive.
History: Construction began in 1937, with the first ten holes opening in 1939 and the remaining eight completed in 1942. Bob Grimsdell shaped the original course, and Rob O’Friel carried out a significant redesign in 1999. The club later became a familiar professional venue, hosting the South African PGA Championship for many years and strengthening its place in Johannesburg golf history.
Did You Know? The course was completed during the early years of the Second World War. That makes the opening of the final eight holes in 1942 an unusual chapter in local golf: the club was finishing a major parkland course while the wider world was experiencing extraordinary disruption.
