Overview: The Victoria Golf Club is a private Melbourne Sandbelt course in Cheltenham, across Park Road from Royal Melbourne. Its heathland character comes from naturally undulating sandy ground, native vegetation, strategic bunkering and green complexes that ask for a precise approach line. Fairways can look generous, but the preferred side of the fairway often determines whether the next shot is comfortable or awkward. The middle and closing sections use the changing ground particularly well, with rises, dips and bold hazards creating different angles from hole to hole. Victoria's identity is not based on a single architect's signature. It is the result of William Meader and Oscar Damman's routing, Alister MacKenzie's advice on bunkering and green changes, and later work that respected the original Sandbelt structure.
History: William Meader founded the club in 1903 at Fishermans Bend in Port Melbourne. The club moved to its current Cheltenham location in 1927, where the new course was designed by Meader and Oscar Damman with assistance from Alister MacKenzie. AusGolf records that Meader and Damman laid out the course in 1923 and that MacKenzie advised on the bunkering of the unfinished layout before its opening. The course has changed over time, including work associated with Peter Thomson and later renovation overseen by Michael Clayton. Those changes were intended to preserve or restore the character of the original hazards while preparing selected holes for tournament play. The history is therefore best understood as a collaborative Sandbelt project, rather than as a course designed solely by MacKenzie.
Did You Know? Alister MacKenzie's influence at Victoria is most visible in the bold strategic bunkering. He advised on hazards and suggested green changes to an existing routing, so the course is a useful reminder that an architect's contribution can be decisive without making him the sole designer.
