Overview: The Tradition at Royal New Kent is a public Virginia course in Providence Forge, routed through rolling ground with a links-inspired character. Mike Strantz used broad movement in the land, large bunker forms and strong angles around the greens to create a course that feels more rugged and dramatic than a typical suburban layout.
History: The course was built in the mid-1990s and opened for play in 1997. It is one of the best-known early examples of Strantz’s expressive design language, with the routing developed for the former Royal New Kent golf destination.
Did You Know? Several holes use large, visually dominant bunkers and sharply shaped fairways to frame the intended line of play. The course’s links influence is a design reference, not a claim that the Virginia site has a coastal Scottish setting.
