Overview: Stone Canyon Golf Club occupies a dramatic high-desert site in Oro Valley, north of Tucson, where Jay Morrish was given unusual freedom to route the course without allowing real-estate demands to dictate every line. The layout works through rock outcrops, washes, native vegetation and broad mountain views, creating a sense of separation between holes even within a residential setting. Strategic interest comes from the land itself: elevation, changing stances and the choice between safer and more ambitious angles are more important than decorative hazards.
History: Stone Canyon's development began in 1999, when the course and surrounding community were planned as a single high-desert project. The golf course was completed first, and initial play began on February 15, 2000, before the permanent clubhouse and much of the surrounding infrastructure were finished. Its early recognition included a place among Golf Digest's top new private courses in 2001. The club's later evolution has added modern community amenities while preserving Morrish's original emphasis on the natural contours of the site.
Did You Know? Archaeological traces on the Stone Canyon property include petroglyphs and pottery associated with the Hohokam, who inhabited the region centuries before the modern golf community. The ancient landscape gives the course a deeper historical setting than its 2000 opening date suggests.
