Overview: The Shattuck in Jaffrey is carved into the granite foothills of Mount Monadnock, with forest-framed holes, natural wetlands and broad mountain views defining the round. Brian Silva’s design uses the rugged site for both drama and strategy: wooded corridors screen neighboring holes, while open fairways and wetland edges create changing lines of play. The course is visually strong without relying on decorative features, because the granite, trees and water already provide a distinctive New Hampshire setting.
History: The course emerged in the early 1990s as a public golf project in the Monadnock region, with Brian Silva responsible for finding playable corridors through the steep and varied terrain. Contemporary course coverage described Silva’s task as working with the land around the former Shattuck Inn setting, and the course’s 1991 date reflects that early opening period. The layout has retained its central architectural idea: separate golf holes are threaded through woodland and wetlands so that each one has its own frame while remaining part of the larger mountain landscape.
Did You Know? The wetlands around The Shattuck support a surprisingly broad wildlife community, including mink, fox, deer, moose, beaver, otter and great blue heron. They are also active hazards, so the ecology is directly connected to the playing character. Silva has called the setting the most spectacular he had encountered, a description grounded in the combination of Monadnock views, granite foothills and forest isolation.
