Overview: The Sanctuary in Sedalia occupies rugged foothill ground near Daniels Park, where steep slopes, exposed rock and changing elevation give Jim Engh’s course its unusual visual and strategic character. The layout works with the land’s natural drama instead of smoothing it into conventional parkland. Tees look across valleys, fairways use the folds between ridges and greens are set into the terrain with a strong sense of place. Every hole asks the player to judge not only line and distance, but how the mountain ground will receive the shot.
History: Dave and Gail Liniger acquired the property after first considering it for an Arabian horse operation, then turned to golf when they recognised the site’s potential. Construction began in February 1995, with their friend Jim Engh designing the course. The first charitable events were held in 1997, establishing The Sanctuary as a private charity course rather than a conventional member-owned or daily-play facility. That purpose remains central to its identity and operation.
Did You Know? In the first year of organised play, eleven charitable organisations were invited to stage events at The Sanctuary. The Linigers asked each group to raise more than one hundred thousand dollars, turning the course into a fundraising instrument as well as a piece of architecture. The idea has grown into a summer calendar built around charitable golf and the community causes it supports.
